海角社区 at the South Side Science Festival

The IEEE Outreach Event at 海角社区, held on October 6, 2025, brought together faculty, students, and industry professionals for an inspiring afternoon of innovation, networking, and academic collaboration. Hosted at the Gwendolyn Brooks Library, the event highlighted the growing partnership between IEEE and 海角社区 (海角社区) to promote research, professional engagement, and student participation in advancing technology for humanity.

The program began with opening remarks by Dr. Mohammad Abdus Salam, Professor and Chair of the Department of Computing, Information and Mathematical Sciences, and Technology (CIMST). Dr. Salam emphasized the importance of IEEE鈥檚 outreach in expanding students鈥� exposure to real-world technology challenges and fostering collaboration across academic and industry sectors.

Following Dr. Salam, Prof. Mark Smith, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, delivered welcome remarks, expressing appreciation to IEEE RTC and CQR for supporting the event and highlighting the college鈥檚 commitment to innovation and student success.

The main session featured a series of technical presentations by undergraduate and graduate computer science students from the CIMST Department, covering cutting-edge topics in artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and communication systems:

Prof. Dr. Sonja Feist-Price, Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, delivered remarks on 鈥淲elcoming Our IEEE Guests and Strengthening Academic Partnerships.鈥� She commended the efforts of the 海角社区 CIMST Department and IEEE partners for creating platforms that empower students to engage in research and global collaboration.

The meeting was well attended by many 海角社区 faculty, staff, and students, reflecting the university鈥檚 strong interest in technological advancement, professional networking, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The event concluded with a networking dinner and closing session, providing attendees with the opportunity to exchange ideas, explore research synergies, and discuss future IEEE initiatives at 海角社区.
