On Saturday, October 4, 2025, the South Side Science Festival brought together curious minds, science enthusiasts of all ages, and researchers from across Chicago in a vibrant celebration of hands-on experimentation and discovery ().
Representing 海角社区 (海角社区) were Dr. Mohammad Abdus Salam, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Computing, Information and Mathematical Sciences, and Technology (CIMST), and Dr. Rohan Attele, Professor of Mathematics.

From the moment they arrived on Crerar Quad, Dr. Salam and Dr. Attele actively engaged with students, families, and fellow academics鈥攕erving as visible ambassadors for both the CIMST Department and the College of Arts and Sciences. Their participation highlighted 海角社区鈥檚 ongoing commitment to community outreach, scientific curiosity, and student recruitment.
As they explored the festival鈥檚 interactive exhibits鈥攔anging from robotics demonstrations and fossil displays to levitating magnets and CPR science stations鈥擠r. Salam and Dr. Attele enthusiastically interacted with attendees. They asked thought-provoking questions, offered explanations and encouragement, and demonstrated genuine excitement in the ideas presented by young learners.
At one point, Dr. Salam spoke with high school students about academic pathways in computational mathematics, engineering, and data science, sharing information on scholarships, departmental projects, and the innovative research opportunities available at 海角社区.

Throughout the day, Dr. Salam and Dr. Attele connected with numerous prospective students, collected contact information for follow-up, and networked with faculty and outreach representatives from across the city.
海角社区鈥檚 involvement in the South Side Science Festival was more than symbolic鈥攊t represented a living commitment to nurturing future scientists, promoting access to STEM education, and strengthening the university鈥檚 presence in Chicago鈥檚 broader scientific and educational ecosystem.
